This week in Math we are going to learn how to graph inequalities on the coordinate grid. On Wednesday and Thursday students will be completing Embedded Assessment #1 for Unit 3. This assessment is on p.163 of their book so feel free to look at it ahead of time. On Friday, we will begin to look at relationships between parallel and perpendicular lines.

In Science students will continue studying evolution. On Monday we will finish our role-play of evolution theories. Then we will look at the effect of the environment and the role of predation in the process of natural selection with a few activities for the remainder of the week.

In Advisory we will be looking at concepts that were done incorrectly on the second interim assessment.

This week in Math we will be starting Unit 3. Unit 3 begins by teaching students about piece-wise functions. Piece-wise functions are functions where there is more than one pattern within a set of data.
In Science students will continue the Evolution unit. This week we will focus on geological time scales and relate them to personal time lines. Students will also learn about the Law of Superposition and look at stratigraphic columns to help determine how old rock layers are.

In Advisory we will continue using this time to go over Math homework, as well as practice some of the skills that need extra practice from the 2nd Interim Assessment.

I am saddened to say that a majority of the class didn't do as well as I had hoped for this quiz, even though it was very similar to the review that was given on Friday. This week in Math we are going to be reviewing Unit 2. On Monday we will have our last Embedded Assessment (on p.131) of this unit. On Tuesday and Wednesday we will be reviewing key concepts of the entire unit for the Unit Test on Thursday.
In Science we are going to continue our Evolution unit. We will be looking at various fossil activities to see what can be determine from fossils as well as the limitations that fossils have. We will then turn to looking at the geological time scale, and how we can divide the time on Earth into different eras.

Important dates:

January, 30, 2012 - $70 due for students going to Washington DC
February 3, 2012 - No school due to Teacher Data Day

This week in Math we will be finishing up Unit 2. This will include reviewing x and y-intercepts as well as making equations from real-life situations. At the end of the week, we will review these concepts and prepare for next weeks quiz (Embedded Assessment #3). As a heads up, next week we will be reviewing the entire unit to prepare for the Unit 2 test. If you are having difficulty in any of the topics discussed, it would be a good idea to get help sooner rather than later!

In Science we are going to be moving back into the books!! Our first unit is on Evolution. We will be starting the unit by looking at how the elephant has evolved over time and how some elephants have become extinct over the years. This will move us into the study of fossils at the end of the week.

In Advisory we will wrap up our practice from the first Interim Assessment as we have our second assessment later in the week.

For those students that are going to Washington DC, the next payment of $70 is due on January 30th!

This week in Math we will be working on writing equations, given different types of information. First we will be writing an equation, given a point and slope. Then we will write equations given two points. Finally, we will work on translating between point-slope form, slope-intercept form, and standard form. On Friday, we will be looking more closely at x-intercepts and y-intercepts.

In Science we will be completing our last mini-unit on photovoltaic (solar) cells. We will complete an investigation throughout the week, and answer analysis questions on Friday.

On Tuesday, we will be completing our MAP test for Math. The goal number to be on grade level for the middle of 8th grade, is 232.

Please remember there is no school on Monday due to observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. See you Tuesday!

Welcome 2012. I hope everyone had a fantastic 2 weeks off and that you are feeling all rested and ready to go in this new year!

In Math we are going to continue Chapter 2, dealing with Linear functions. We are going to start off by discussing the difference between direct and inverse variations and look more closely at the difference in the equations used for each one. We will be completing Embedded Assessment #2 on Thursday (with a review on Wednesday). On Friday, we will be reviewing slope-intercept form.

In Science we are going to start one of our last mini-units: Wet Cell Batteries. We will be looking at energy conversion and students will be creating and conducting an experiment that uses a wet cell chamber to convert chemical energy to electrical energy.

In Advisory we will be reviewing our last major topic from Quarter 1 Interim Assessment: Probability. Students will ultimately be tested on all of these review topics on the next interim assessment.

This week in Math we will be taking our first Embedded Assessment for Unit 2. Students completed a review on Friday to help study for this quiz. For the rest of the week, we will be looking at different situations that are linear, and use this information to review what was taught last year with "starting number" (y-intercept) and "pattern" (slope) and use it to make equations, graphs, and tables.
In Science we will be completing analysis questions based on our electric motor activity from last week. We will then be taking a day to review sound, light, and electric motor concepts before our test on Wednesday.

This week we will be having a Career Fair on Thursday afternoon, allowing students to meet with and ask questions with adults of different careers. Students are asked to come with questions to ask these adults, especially if they are interested in that career themselves.

Since there were not enough students that paid the $50 deposit for Washington DC, the deadline has been extended until Monday, December 19th. Please bring your money in by then, if you haven't done so already, and would like to attend the trip.

This week in Math we are going to continue our understanding of functions, by specifically looking at linear functions. A majority of this week will focus on the slope of a line and all the various ways you can determine slope of a line. Friday we will be completing an Embedded Assessment. As usual, feel free to look at it ahead of time to see what topics you should be studying.

In Science we are starting another mini-unit. This unit is on Electricity. We will start off by reading about different energy sources on Monday. Later in the week, students will be creating a motor and a generator and noting the differences between the two. We will end the week by reviewing these topics and answering analysis questions.

In Advisory we will spend some time going over homework from last week (last week's homework sheet is due on Tuesday) as well as reviewing ratios and probability.

Don't forget that if you plan on going to Washington DC, the $50 non-refundable deposit is due on Monday.

This week in Math we are starting Unit 2 - Linear Functions. We will be introducing relations and functions and figuring out how to determine if graphs or tables are functions using the vertical line test. Then, looking at functions, we will be determining the domain and range of those functions, using set notation.

In Science we will be answering our analysis questions from our sound activity on Friday. Then we will read a section regarding waves - sound and light wave characteristics, and answering analysis questions regarding that. At the end of the week, we wil be having a quiz over our short "Waves" unit.

In Advisory we will be continuing to practice skills from the last interim assessment. This week we will focus on analyzing graphs and proportions.

This week in Math we will be wrapping up our first unit in Algebra - Patterns and Equations. On Monday, students will review absolute value equations and inequalities, that was taught last week. Then, Tuesday through Thursday will be spent reviewing each of the major sections of the unit, in order to prepare for Friday's unit test.

In Science we will be starting our next unit on "Waves, Electricity, and Magnetism". Our first section of the unit will be spent looking at waves - the different parts of waves, how waves are created, and the different types of waves. The rest of the week will be spent looking at sound energy and sound waves.

In Advisory we will be looking at various types of graphs. Although most students understand bar graphs, line graphs, and pie graphs, students have shown difficulty with understanding how to analyze the graphs correctly.

Remember, that I will not be there on Monday, but all work is to be completed by the end of the day and turned in to the sub. If you were absent on Wednesday, before Thanksgiving, it is your responsibility to get the notes from a classmate and complete all work as well! See you Tuesday!!

Happy Thanksgiving Week! It's a time of year to appreciate the things we have and to acknowledge things we are thankful for. I am thankful for many things, but mostly thankful for my health and my family. What are you thankful for?

This week in Math we will be focusing on solving one-variable inequalities and compound inequalities. Students will solve them like multi-step equations, but will then have to graph their result on a number line based on the inequality given. On Wednesday, we will be discussing absolute value and will solve various absolute value equations.

In Science we will be wrapping up our unit on Light and Color. On Monday we will review the major concepts of the unit and on Tuesday we will have our Unit Test.

In Advisory we will continue practicing math skills that students have difficulty with, on their interim assessment. This week's skill is reading and interpreting various graphs.

This week in Math we are going to continue our focus of solving equations. Early in the week we will practice solving multi-step equations as well as give an explanation for each step that is completed. We will have a quiz on this (Embedded Assessment #2) on Thursday. On Friday, we are going to start learning about and solving inequalities.

In Science we are going to review activities 4-6 on Monday and have a quiz of this material on Tuesday. We will start Activity 7 on Tuesday, after the quiz. This activity will allow students to combine different beams of colored light to make other colors. Students will also look at the position of shadows and how they are affected by different colors of light. Later in the week, Activity 8 will be completed, which includes the idea of how much energy is transferred when light is used, and how long it takes for this light energy to be transferred.

In Advisory we are going to continue using it as extra Math time. We will go over homework problems from the week as well as review the skills that students had difficulty on, on the Interim Assessment that was completed 2 weeks ago.

New beginnings!

Monday marks the first day of the second quarter. I found out on Friday that although I thought that grades were going to continue where you ended in first quarter, that is actually not the case. All grades are brand new as of Monday. That means that everyone starts out with 100% - an A! It is up to you to keep this grade. In Algebra, this is very important in making sure you keep a passing grade so that you can use this as High School credit. Every grade from here on out will be figured into your Algebra grade.

This week in Math we are going to first start off by reviewing the different types of numbers and properties. Unfortunately, fewer people did well on last week's quiz than I had hoped, so we are going to review all those topics first! Then for the rest of the week, we are going to start solving equations. Last year we did "solve for the unknown", also known as "one-step" and "two-step" equations. This week we are going to review that, but also add in "multi-step" equations and story problems. As mentioned above, it is critical to take good notes and use them for your class assignments, to make sure you are getting the procedure correct.

In Science we are continuing our study of color. We will be discussing why certain objects are certain colors and if those objects will always be that color, in an activity called "Is an orange always orange". We will also look more closely at combining colored light. This week we will also be having another quiz, so be sure to keep up with all the assignments and questions we go over in class.

This week in Math we are going to continue looking at different sets of numbers. Friday we looked at whole numbers, natural numbers, and integers. This week we will add rational numbers and irrational numbers to that. We will also look at the different properties of numbers (commutative, associative, identities, and inverses). At the end of the week we are going to review Lessons 1.1 - 1.3 and have a quiz on Friday. This quiz will be the last grade for this quarter, which ends on Friday.

In Science we are going to continue looking at color and light. Last week we focused on looking at the spectra of white light and this week we are going to focus on looking at spectra of different color lights. Will the spectra look the same or will it look different?

This week in Math we will be starting ALGEBRA!!! We will start this unit by investigating patterns. As most of you should remember, many of the graphs we make have patterns to them. We will be looking at patterns in tables and graphs. We will also recall how to make equations and expressions, and use them to solve different situations.

In Science this week we will be starting our unit on Light and Color. Our first sections to study are looking at the light spectrum and making and using a spectroscope.

Other news this week:

We will be going on a field trip to Greenfield Village on Wednesday. We will be leaving at 10am and returning at 3pm. Students are expected to bring a bag lunch, unless they requested one from the school. Students must be in full uniform.
On Thursday, from 5-7pm, there will be a Harvest Festival. Parents and students are welcome. Please be sure to return the form indicating that you will be in attendance if you plan to come. Extra forms can be found in the office. Students that attend the Harvest Festival will be given a ticket for free dress on Friday.
On Friday, there is a school dance in the afternoon. Tickets are on sale during lunch, for $3, but if you wait until the day of the dance, tickets are $5.
We only have 2 more weeks left this quarter. Please be aware of your grade and feel free to check out engrade whenever you need to, to double check your grades.

This week in Math we will be finishing up our mini-unit on Pythagorean Theorem. Last week we found out how to use the theorem to solve problems of various types, and we proved the theorem as well. This week we are going to be given 3 side lengths and we have to use the Pythagorean Theorem to determine whether or not those 3 sides make a right triangle or a different kind of triangle.

In Science we are going to be finishing up our unit on Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration. We will be completing a review as well as a unit test during the week. Don't forget that since we have Science and Math MEAP this week, we will not be having science on Tuesday and Wednesday.

This week in Math we will be starting Unit 6 -- Pythagorean Theorem. The Pythagorean Theorem is a formula that is used to find the length of any missing side of a right triangle, as long as you have measurements for 2 of the 3 sides.

In Science we will continue working on our mini-unit on Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration. We will be taking our Reading MEAP test on Tuesday and Wednesday morning, so we will not be completing Science on those days.

Happy October!

This week in Math, we will be finishing up Unit 5. On Monday we are going to look at graphs that are designed to mislead you and determine ways that people make graphs to make the data look different than what it really should look like. On Tuesday we will have a review for Embedded Assessment #2. Wednesday is the Quiz (Embedded Assessment). On Thursday we will have a review of the whole unit, with the Unit Test being on Friday.

In Science we are going to start a unit on Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration. Although we have talked about Photosynthesis in the past, this mini-unit will really go in-depth with this topic and how plants make their food.

Last Friday everyone received a username and password to be able to find out their grade at any time. Have you checked out your grade yet? Remember, everyone must bring the bottom of their paper back signed on Monday and if you logged in to see your grade and can tell me your Math and Science grade so far, you will receive extra credit!

This week, in Math we will be continue our study of different graphs. Last week we looked at box plots, stem plots, and scatterplots. This week we will look further at scatterplots, double bar graphs, and line graphs. Students will also consider different situations where simulations are better to use than collecting actual data. We will look at various ways to conduct simulations, to understand this concept better.

In Science, we will be finishing our review of various scientific concepts, by looking at Earth Science topics. On Wednesday, students will be having a quiz on each section - physical, life, and earth, and will be able to use their completed worksheets from last week and this week to complete them. On Thursday, we will be playing Jeopardy as one final review.

In Advisory we will be using this time to extend our math understanding. We will be looking at the weekly homework and going over practice problems to help reinforce topics discussed during class. Students are urged to bring their math homework and binder to advisory to get the most out of this review/homework help time.

This week in Math we are going to spend most of our time looking at graphs -- primarily box and whisker plots, stem and leaf plots, and scatterplots. Students will learn how to make them, read them, and analyze them. We will also review the measures of central tendency, as they relate to these different graphs.

In Science we will be continuing our review of Life, Physical, and Earth Science as we review for the MEAP test. Each day, we will focus on one of the major branches of science, reviewing 4 major concepts within each branch. This is an intense review since it covers material learned in 5th - 7th grades, so students are strongly urged to stay focused and take notes to review all this information as weeks get closer to MEAP testing in October.

In Advisory we will continue spending our time reviewing math concepts from last year. Using the pre-test that was taken the first week of school, students will have the opportunity to ask questions regarding any information they are unsure of. Again, as with science, it will be in the students best interest to come to class focused and take notes on anything that is new to them, so they can review it before MEAP.

This week we will be starting our "normal" days, with Science and Social Studies in the morning and Math and ELA in the afternoon.

In Math we will be starting a unit on probability and statistics. We will first start with using the common rock, paper, scissors game to look at experimental versus theoretical probability. We will then use Tree and Venn Diagrams to determine various probabilities for specific events. Towards the end of the week we will review measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode, range) and also discuss outliers. Using this data we will begin to understand and create box and whisker plots, after identifying median, lower quartile, upper quartile, minimum and maximum.

In Science we will be using our practice MEAP test as a basis for review for this years Science MEAP. Since the Science MEAP covers material from 5-7th grade, we will be spending each day going over major concepts taught in these 3 years. I will basis each day's lesson off of the questions that a majority of students got incorrect from their test last week.

In Advisory we will be using this time to review major concepts from Math last year, for this year's MEAP test. Students took a practice test last week as well, and we will go over questions that many students got incorrect. We will also have a few mini-lessons to teach concepts that were never taught last year because we ran out of time.

I look forward to starting the year off on a good note. Please remember on Monday to bring all of your supplies to class. For Science, you need a notebook (which you are to purchase on your own, or purchase one from me for $.25). For Math, you need to bring your binder and notebook that I provided to you. Remember, you need your planner for each and every class!

The boys are here...

Everything went as planned on Thursday and two very healthy boys were born.

Logan Matthew Perez was born at 3:04pm (6 lbs and 8 oz.) and Ellis Steven Perez was born at 3:05pm (5 lbs and 15 oz.)

We are all home from the hospital now and things are going well. Here are a few pictures of the boys..

This week in Math we will be finishing up the book "Moving Straight Ahead". Investigation 4 deals with understanding "slope" and using it along with "y-intercept" to be able to graph linear equations. Students should be able to identify slope and y-intercept using a graph, table, and equation.

In Science students will continue studying genetics but looking at the difference between asexual and sexual reproduction. Students will then look at the probability of inheriting various genes from their parents and further understand the difference between dominant and recessive genes.

FYI: Please remember that this will be my last full week at school before I leave on maternity leave. Because I won't be there, this blog will not be updated weekly with what we are doing in class or quiz/test results. This week in Math we will continue our use of pouches and coins to understand the idea of solving equations. We will move from the visual idea of how to do it, to the more symbolic way of doing it with numbers and variables. By the end of the week, students should have a very good idea of how to solve different types of equations, using the same process we used with the pouches and coins.

In Science we will be starting a new unit on "Genetics". Since our last unit on "Cells" was very short and this unit ties into it quite well, we will not be testing the "Cells" unit separately, but will have one big test at the end of the "Genetics" unit. We will start the unit by looking at traits for 6 human characteristics. We will then look at the purpose of genetic testing and different types of reproduction that could cause a trait to be carried down to offspring.

This week in Math we will be continuing our study of equations. On Monday, we will review topics from Investigation 2 and have our quiz on Tuesday. On Wednesday, we will be starting Investigation 3, which deals with solving equations. Although we have dealt only with equations on a few situations, students will be able to practice 2-step equations and multi-step equations in order to solve problems instead of always relying on a table or graph.

In Science we will continue our study of cells. We will address the concepts of cell respiration, functions of the cell membrane, and the general structure of all cells. We will also talk about the relative size of cells and determine how they can function so well when they are so small.

In Advisory we will use our time to have class meetings and address concerns that students have.

Please remember that there is no school for students on Friday due to Teacher Professional Development.

This week in Math we are going to continue our work with linear relationships, found in tables, graphs, and equations. Students are going to be given multiple scenarios where they have to find out when and where two linear relationships will cross (or in real-life scenarios, this means where the values of two different relationships will be the same). They will be introduced to the mathematical terms "y-intercept" and "coefficient" and realize that they already know what these are, but just haven't known the technical word to it yet. At the end of the week, students should have a basic understanding of the role of the y-intercept and the coefficient in tables, graphs, and equations.

In Science students will look at different infectious diseases and learn about scientific discoveries regarding these different diseases. Students will also be able to look at various types of cells and analyze the similarities and differences among these cells.

I look forward to seeing everyone after their week long break. I hope everyone is well rested and ready to finish out the second trimester strong! PS -- only 2 more weeks of the second trimester. This gives you only a short time to improve your grade if you weren't happy with your progress report last week.

This week in Math, we will continue our first Investigation of "Moving Straight Ahead". This investigation is a good review of how to build tables, graphs, and equations, looking at various real-world situations. Students should use this investigation to review how the pattern shows up in the table, graph, and equation, and most importantly, how to determine the numbers used in an equation. We will review this unit on Thursday, and have a quiz on Friday.

This week we will not be doing Science lessons as normal because of Exhibitions.

In Advisory students will be presenting their exhibition. If you have any questions regarding this exhibition and the requirements set forth, please refer to previous blog postings, or the exhibition rubric passed out in class last week.

This week in Math, we'll be finishing up our unit on "Comparing and Scaling". On Monday, we'll be taking our Investigation 4 Quiz. On Tuesday, we'll be reviewing the entire unit, recalling information regarding ratios, fractions, differences, percents, rates of change, unit rates, and proportions. Students will complete a study guide that they should study from, for the test on Wednesday. On Thursday, we'll be starting our next algebra unit entitled "Moving Straight Ahead". In this unit, we'll pick up where we left off in "Variables and Patterns" (our first book), and continue our studies in graphing, making tables, making equations, and solving equations (solve for the unknown). STUDENTS -- PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR GRAPH PAPER STARTING ON THURSDAY. I will have some graph paper for your use, but each day you don't have your own paper, you will get points deducted from your table!!!

In Science we will be starting a biology unit. We will begin by looking at infectious diseases, which will give the students an idea of how some diseases are spread from one person to another, such as with colds and the flu. We will do a model of this type of "spreading" of diseases, and then look further into what things contribute to disease transmission (moving from one person to another). This unit is very helpful especially this time of year, so I'm hoping students learn a lot from these activities.

In Advisory students will be practicing their exhibitions in small groups. Students will be expected to email me their presentation or have it on a flash drive to use with the smart board, in order to practice it. Exhibitions are next week, so students might also use advisory time to work on writing out notecards, making an agenda, or practicing in other small groups. This is the time to make sure everything is just perfect, so please use this time wisely!! If you have not signed up for an exhibition, please do so quickly, before the "good times" run out!

It's Exhibition Time!

It's about that time again! Exhibitions will be the week of February 14th-18th, and the times offered are: 1pm, 1:30pm, 2pm, or 2:30pm daily. Please make sure to return the form sent home or respond on this blog entry to confirm your time. It is first come, first serve, so please try to decide quickly in order to ensure you get the time that you want.

Notes about exhibitions:

Students are required to have a powerpoint presentation. They should have a slide for EACH project that they have and it should reflect whatever it is they are talking about (bullet points of the information, pictures reflecting their information, etc.). They should not merely have "MATH" as a slide that they are going to show while they read information for it.
Students may want to have note cards to help them remember information, but they should never have to read directly off the notecards. Remember, they are the "professional" of this career so they should know the information well enough that they can just speak from knowledge about it, using the notecards as a back-up.
Students are required to have 3 Math projects, 2 ELA projects, 2 Science projects, 2 Social Studies, and 2 Personal Qualities projects.
Students must show depth of knowledge in each topic. Many students know basic information of their career, but their job is to research information to add to that basic information to make it "new" information. They don't want to bore the class with information that everyone already knows.
Students have 15-20 minutes to present their exhibition. Any time over or under this timeframe will result in a deduction of points. It is their responsibility to practice their exhibition to make sure they are within this timeframe.

Again, feel free to respond on this blog posting, or send the note in with the date and time you choose. I will then confirm the choice you have suggested so you can know exactly when your child's time is going to be. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.

This week in Math, we'll be finishing up Investigation 4 of Comparing and Scaling. This investigation deals with writing and solving proportions and is a wrap-up of what we've done for the entire unit. We will be finishing up Investigation 4 on Tuesday, with a review on Wednesday and a quiz on Thursday. On Friday, we'll start a review of the entire book for our test next week.

In Science we will be finishing up our chemistry unit. On Monday the students will get a review sheet to complete in class and we'll go over all the answers on Tuesday, with the Unit Test being on Wednesday. Starting on Thursday we'll start our new unit, with our first lesson being on Infectious Diseases.

In Advisory students will be expected to show me their last section by Friday. At this point all of their sections should be done and they should be preparing their notecards and agenda's for their exhibition. Remember, if you check-in before Friday with all 5 sections, you will be given the "exceeding" mark for "preparation" at exhibitions. Any students that have had to go to Wallstreet because they are behind in work will receive a lower grade since they haven't kept up with the work throughout the check-in process. Exhibitions will be the week of February 14th. Notes will be going home this week to sign up for a date and time.

This week in Math we will continue our studies on rates. Students will be looking at unit rates (the amount for one of something) AND will be able to determine how to set up the rate to solve (which number goes on top of the fraction and which number goes on the bottom). Students will have a quiz at the end of the week over these skills.

In Science we are going to continue talking about various ways of handling waste. We have already talked about dilution and incineration, so now we will look at "reclaiming metal". Towards the end of the week, we will start reviewing for the Unit Test for next week.

In Advisory students should be done with 4 of their 5 projects. Any students that are not caught up with all their projects will have Wallstreet until they are done with them. Our last check-in is on Friday, February 4th.

This week in Math we will be continuing our study of ratios. On Tuesday we will review information from Investigation 2 and have a quiz on Wednesday. On Thursday, we will start Investigation 3 where we will study the idea of unit rates. Friday we will continue this as we look at speed.

In Science we will start out the week finishing our experiment from Thursday regarding open and closed systems. We will complete one more chemical reaction and discuss the changes in mass between the experiments. Later in the week, we will be looking at the concept of incineration as a possible way to get rid of waste (and compare it to dilution that we already talked about last week).

In Advisory it is expected that students are finishing up their 4th project (ELA, Social Studies, or Science). A check in will take place later in the week to check for this project to be done. Unfortunately a few students never checked in their third project, so they have now received a zero for preparation of that project. Although I still want to see that it is done, it will be marked down as "late" at this point. Please do not fall behind -- exhibitions will be here before we know it!

This week in Math we are going to take our first quiz for Comparing and Scaling. Then for the rest of the week, we are going to continue our study of ratios (part to part and part to whole) in different real-life situations to see how they are used on a daily basis. We will analyze data also to determine which ratios are better in different scenarios.

In Science we are going to be finishing up our investigation on diluting the copper chloride mixture from the circuit boards last week. We are going to talk about how much it has to be diluted in order to make it okay to dump in the water supply. We will also look at the Law of Conservation of Mass in a closed and open system, as well as look at incineration as a method for handling toxic wastes.

In Advisory, students should continue working on their projects. Most students checked in their third section on Friday, but the following students still need to check-in:

This week in Math students will be starting a new unit called "Comparing and Scaling". This unit continues to discuss scale factor and the idea of proportions. Students did very well with the last book, so I anticipate that students will be just as successful with this book. This first week of the unit students will be looking at comparison statements that are used by various companies in the real-world and they will be asked to judge the quality of these statements mathematically. REMEMBER -- if you had homework to do over break (mandatory for students under an 80% in class -- extra credit for those that were above an 80% in class), it is due on Tuesday!!!!

In Science we will continue our Chemistry Unit and will look at circuit boards. Students will get the chance to actually "etch" a circuit board (more information on what that means will be given in class!) using a copper chloride solution. Then, we will use the copper chloride solution to further investigate the concentration of copper chloride.

In Advisory it is expected that students will be ready to check in their ELA projects on Friday. Although I hope that everyone was able to spend some quality time with their family and relax over break, I hope some time was used for project work.

It is amazing how fast this year has gone so far, isn't it? Let's make this week very productive so we can leave for holiday break on a good note!

This week in Math we will be finishing up our unit on "Stretching and Shrinking". We will have a review for Investigation 5 as well as a quiz (take-home -- if you don't return it, it will be a zero!!!). Then we will review all the major concepts in the book as well as have a test on the entire book before break. It is very important to study hard for this test, since it is the first major test of the trimester!

In Science we are going to finish looking at the materials needed to make a computer, including the waste that is produced. We will then look at different ways to dispose possibly hazardous materials that are created when a computer is manufactured to see if any of them are more safe than others.

In Advisory it is expected that students are done with their math section (I did a check-in on Friday and all but 1 person had theirs -- if you were absent Friday, you can either email it to me or have it to check in on Monday). This week you should be working on personal qualities. Remember, feel free to use the options given on the checklist, or if you think of something else you'd like to do, just make sure to get it approved by me first! Check-in for personal qualities will be on Friday!

This week in Math we will review Investigation 4 concepts (finding the scale factor to help us find the length of missing sides and angles within polygons and using ratios to determine if shapes are similar) on Monday for a quiz on Tuesday. From Wednesday-Friday, we will start looking at real-life situations where we can use the idea of similar triangles to determine how tall an object is.

In Science we will look at what happens when we mix polyvinyl alcohol with sodium borate. We will then study the idea of synthetic plastics and the types of chemical reactions that are used to develop these plastics. At the end of the week, we'll study the types of materials used in making computers and the amount of waste produced from manufacturing them.

In Advisory students will be able to work on their career topics. On Friday, I will be checking in their math projects. Remember, all projects must be on powerpoint (no poster boards this time around) and if anything has to be read from directly, there should be some sort of visual aid on the powerpoint and your paper must be typed out. Please refer to the checklist given out last week for the options that you have for math (you must choose 3).

Only 10 more school days before holiday break. So far, many of you have started out this trimester very well -- keep it up!

This week in Math we are going to continue our studies on scale factor and similar shapes. Since few people did very well with their quiz before Thanksgiving, we are going to review the entire quiz concepts again on Monday before moving on to Investigation 3, which will require these skills. Throughout the week we will continue looking at different shapes and finding the measure of missing side lengths using ratios and scale factor. Remember, if you need extra help, you may come up at lunch on Tuesday and Thursday for that help!

In Science we are going to look at the properties of plastic. We are going to find various properties so that we can determine what type of plastic an unknown sample of plastic is. Students will use the results of the physical and chemical properties of the plastics to come up with a solution.

In Advisory we are going to continue to determine what requirements are needed for the 2nd trimester exhibition topic of "careers". After we brainstorm ideas, students will have to choose two options out of each category (math, science, social studies, ELA, and personal qualities). By choosing and completing 2 categories, students will be sure to have a depth of knowledge of their topic. Remember, research is still needed to complete these tasks -- not just the knowledge you already have about the topic.

Please remember that Monday marks the first day of the 2nd trimester. Everyone starts out with 100% in their classes, but it is up to them on whether or not they keep that 100%. Be sure to take advantage of any opportunity you have to correct mistakes for a better grade, get extra help, etc. so you can do even better than last trimester!

Hi everyone. Are you looking forward to a short school week and a long holiday weekend with your family? I know I am!

This week in Math we will be taking our quiz on Investigation 2. This quiz will include filling in missing side lengths of shapes with a given scale factor, having to find the scale factor between shapes, and determining if shapes are similar by looking for the scale factor among the shapes. On Monday we will complete our review and Tuesday and on Wednesday, we will have our quiz.

In Science we are going to further investigate atoms, elements, chemical bonds, molecules, and compounds. We will be making models of each of these to get a better understanding of how they are different from one another. Students will also be having a notebook quiz, so please make sure to have all recent analysis questions done (and corrected), rubrics, and labsheets so you can use them effectively on the quiz.

In Advisory we will use this time to further discuss exhibitions from last week -- what went well and what didn't. We also will start brainstorming ideas for the next trimester. On Wednesday (as long as all goes well with the class during the week), we will take a quick trip to the library to return books from last trimester and get new books for this trimester.

Please remember that this is officially the last week of the trimester, so in both classes, make sure to do your best on class work and quizzes. This is your last chance to raise your grade!

As we move into Thanksgiving later this week, feel free to comment on what you are looking forward to this holiday season.

This week in Math we will continue to explore the idea of similarity and scale factor by using pictures on a coordinate grid. Students will spend Monday and Tuesday completing these pictures and will analyze them in another activity on Wednesday and Thursday. By the end of the week it is anticipated that the students will understand how to determine scale factor, even if decimal scale factors are used.

In Science we will continue our studies of the elements and the periodic table. Early in the week we will finish a reading on the periodic table, focusing mainly on compounds that are created from the elements on the table. We will finish the week by creating models to further investigate atoms, elements, chemical bonds, molecules, and compounds.

In Advisory it is the big week. It is EXHIBITION week! I am hoping that students are successfully able to present the information they gathered for the past 2 months. They are expected to present 5 mini-projects and show a depth of knowledge, along with a visual aid, to prove that they learned a great amount of information regarding their topic. Remember, the time frame is 15-20 minutes, so make sure each mini-project has about 3-4 minutes of information! Please refer to the rubric passed out 2 weeks ago regarding how the students will be graded.

Element Symbols

Some students in class asked why some elements had symbols (abbreviations) that were not using any of the letters that were in the name. For example, Potassium has a symbol of K, Sodium has a symbol of Na. WHY???? If you can find out, please EMAIL me so that multiple people can respond for extra credit. Synthetic Elements

This week in Math we will continue our discussion on similar figures. Students should know the basic "rules" for similar figures relating to side lengths, basic shape, angles, perimeter, and area. Students will have a quiz on Thursday over this topic. On Friday, we will review the coordinate grid for an activity next week relating coordinate grid figures to similar figures.

In Science we will finish our investigation on determining the properties of a variety of objects that we started on Friday. For the remainder of the week we are going to start talking about elements, atoms, and the periodic table.

In Advisory students will be working on making notecards, practicing on the smartboard (if they are using it for their presentation) and making an agenda. Exhibitions start next week, so as of now, students should be ready to go with all of their projects. Please refer to the exhibition rubric that was sent home last week as to what students will be graded on. Also, if you don't have an exhibition time yet, please sign up ASAP! Options of times are running out!

Exhibitions

The first trimester is quickly coming to a close. Our first trimester exhibitions will be during the week of November 15-19th. Students will be presenting their 5 mini-projects for the topic they chose at the beginning of the year. Each project will be graded on the following:

Depth of knowledge -- information presented must be NEW information -- something they learned by doing their research -- NOT something they've already known. Information must also be in the student's own words. Anything copied directly from the source will not be allowed and student will receive a 0 for that section.
Preparedness/time spent on each section -- how prepared they are with presenting their information -- not stumbling over their words, not reading directly from their paper or powerpoint. Students should be able to casually talk to us about their topic because they know it well enough. Students should also have enough information about each topic, spending about 3-4 minutes on each section (for a total of 15-20 minutes total)
Visual aids -- Students need a visual aid for EACH of their mini-projects. These visual aids must be neat and professional, and easy for everyone to be able to see from the front of the room.

Exhibition notes went home today, but you can respond to this posting if you'd like to, to reserve your day and time. I will confirm on here (or on the returned paper) so you know the time of your child's exhibition.

This week in Math we will be taking our unit test on Variables and Patterns. Starting on Wednesday, we will start our new unit of "Stretching and Shrinking" which deals with identifying similar figures by finding the scale factor for corresponding side lengths. We will look at the relationships between sides, angles, perimeter, and area to help us identify these similar figures.

In Science we will continue our second Chemistry Unit by looking more closely at the three materials we studied last week (Plastic, aluminum, and glass). Students will make a life cycle diagram after reading about the life cycle of these materials. At the end of the week, students will look at properties of common materials, and will sort the materials based on their properties.

In Advisory students will be expected to show me the remaining 2 areas for their learning plan by Friday. On Friday, I will do the final check in, and on this day I expect to see ALL FIVE of the mini-projects students have completed. In past check-in's, I have suggested things to students regarding information to alter, add to, put in own words, etc. On this Friday, I expect that this is done for all 5 projects.

On Monday, there will be an exhibition sign-up note coming home (there will also be a post on here that you can respond to) regarding options for dates and times. Please choose your time and date quick because it will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.

This week in Math we will be finishing Investigation 3, in Variables and Patterns. It is expected that students understand how to make equations from tables and graphs. Students should also understand how to fill in a given variable in the equation and get the answer for the other variable. A quiz for Investigation 3 will be on Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday, students will complete a review on the entire unit of "Variables and Patterns". The Unit Test will be on Monday.

In Science students will have their first Chemistry Test. On Tuesday, we will begin our second unit. In this unit, we will begin discussing the life-cycles of various materials. We will begin by looking at the differences between aluminum, glass, and plastic containers.

In Advisory students will be expected to show me their 3rd project by Friday. Those students that do not have anything to show, will not be able to join us at the Detroit Public Library/Wayne State.

This week is SPIRIT WEEK! Students will be allowed to participate based on their behavior and correct uniform for the month of October. It costs $1 to participate each day.

Monday -- Teachers dress like students and students dress like teachers.
Tuesday -- Crazy sock and tie day (school uniform still required)
Wednesday -- Nerd day (school uniform not required, but school colors are)

This week in Math, we are going to continue with Investigation 3, where we will be continuing our work with making equations on tables and graphs. By the end of the week, I am hoping that students are comfortable with making equations given any table or graph, by analyzing the patterns in the table or graph. By the way, the Math MEAP will be taken on Tuesday!

In Science we are going to be finishing our Chemistry Unit. We will be wrapping up our unit by looking at a variety of household cleaners to see which one would be the safest to use in a hospital, based on all of our discussion on chemicals. On Thursday, we will be completing a unit review and our test will be on Friday.

In Advisory it is the assumption that students are working on their 2nd exhibition project. Any student that did not complete their 1st project will be required to stay after school each day this week until it is done. The second project will be checked in by Friday this week!

This week will be a busy one! We will be starting MEAP on Tuesday and it will last for 3 days this week. Next week we will be finishing up MEAP with 2 days of testing. With this in mind, it is extremely important, for you to be in school on time, or else you will risk missing the test altogether and you will have to take it at another time.

In Math students will begin looking at how to solve equations. Last week we worked on simplifying and evaluating expressions and this week we are going to move to equations. Students will learn the steps to one-step equations (similar to "solve for the unknown" from last year) and then we'll move to the more difficult, but still easy, two-step equations. With the correct procedure being used, students will find both of these topics quite easy!

In Science we will be looking at what the 6 unidentified pieces were from last week, based on density. On Friday, we took the mass and volume of the pieces and calculated the density. On Monday, we will be taking those results and matching it up with the specific metal they were actually made of. For the rest of the week, we will be looking at the two unidentified pieces from the mixture at the beginning of the unit. We will determine the mass, volume, and then calculate the density of both pieces to find out what metals they are.

In Advisory students will have time to work on their project work, but remember, a majority of this work should be completed at home. With only 25 minutes each day to work on it, most students won't be able to get everything done in school. On Friday, I will be doing my first check-in. Each student was able to decide what section to work on first, and they will be required to show it to me on Friday.

This week in Math we will be having our second quiz. This quiz will be on analyzing graphs and tables more thoroughly. For the remainder of the week, the students will learn concepts that are required to know for the MEAP, but not necessarily taught in their book.

In Science we are going to do some measuring activities. Students will study the idea of volume and will learn the two different ways to measure the volume of the two solids that are still unknown. We will use that data along with the mass of the two solids to find the specific density, which will then help us figure out exactly what those two solids are.

In Advisory we will finally start our learning plans. Students will be able to choose their own topic, but they will be required to figure out themselves, how it will fit in to each subject. Students are hopefully already thoughtful of what topic they want to do, so they can get started rather quickly. They are also given the choice of how they want to present their information at their exhibition, to make it as creative as possible.

Here's to our first week in October. I'll see everyone Monday!

This coming week in Math we will continue our study of graphs. We will review our quiz from Friday (and allow for a "re-do" for those that didn't perform very well) on Monday. Throughout the rest of the week, we are going to look at various tables and graphs and spend time analyzing them. This is what was most difficult for students in Investigation 1, so hopefully after this practice, students will feel more comfortable with problems asking to analyze the information.

In Science we will continue our study of the unknown liquid and solid. On Monday and Tuesday we will finish our activity with the analysis of the two unknown liquids and hopefully students will have a good idea of what the two liquids are. On Wednesday and Thursday, we will turn our study to the unknown solids that were in the mixture and start to analyze them separately to determine what each of them are. On Friday, we will finish the week by looking at how to determine volume of an object, and use that information to further determine what each of the solids are.

In Advisory I am still expecting that students have turned in their Learning Plan Sheet that was sent home last week. We will be using both the student and parent input to determine goals for this trimester.

This week in Math we will be continuing our practice with working with tables and graphs. Last week, students focused their time on the 5 criteria needed for a graph, as well as learning about scale and plotting points. This week, students will be learning how to make a table from a graph, AND making both a table and a graph from notes. So far, I am extremely impressed with their hard work and diligence as we begin our first algebra unit. I look forward to them shining on their first quiz on Friday!

In Science we will continue looking at the unknown mixture and discuss the plans the students made on Friday as far as how to separate the mixture. We will then further analyze each liquid and solid separately in order to discover what each of the components of the mixture really is. Again, students should prepare to have another notebook quiz on Friday. Make sure all analysis questions are answered and complete, as well as all vocabulary words written in your notebook.

We will continue using Advisory as a MEAP review time and/or study time, depending on the day. Students will be asked to fill out a short survey regarding their goals and interests, and will also be taking it home for their parents responses as well. This will help us as we develop our first learning plan in the coming weeks.

Our first full week!

This is it! Time to officially start Math and Science!

This week in Math we will be starting our new book, Variables and Patterns. This is a beginning algebra book where students will learn how to make tables, graphs, and equations from everyday situations. This week, the students will specifically be looking at jumping jacks. They will actually be doing jumping jacks for a specified time and we will graph the number of jumps they did during every interval. As the week goes on, we are going to compare this to a biking situation in which people biked a certain number of miles each hour. Please note, there will be homework, so make sure it is completed and brought in the next day!

In Science we are going to be starting with a Chemistry unit. We will be looking at mixtures of items (both liquids and solids) and use different skills to determine what each of the unknown liquids and solids are. Students will learn about corrosion, flammability, and what hazardous materials are. At the end of the week, students will develop an investigation where they will attempt to separate all of the liquids and solids from one another to study them more in depth.

In Advisory we will use that time to review for the upcoming MEAP. Students took a practice math MEAP last Friday and with the results, we will be going over any questions they may have or questions on the test that they simply didn't understand at all.

It's Back to School Time!!!

Can you believe it?!?! The summer is over and you are all returning for 7th grade! I'm very excited to see everyone on Tuesday and I hope you are all excited to be coming back.

Just a few reminders:

School doors open at 8am and you are considered tardy if you are not IN the classroom by 8:15am.
You must be in school uniform EVERYDAY! Same uniform as last year: red, white, or black polo (which must be tucked in at all times), black pants, belt, and ALL-black shoes. There is no excuse for coming out of uniform considering you all knew what was expected last year.
Math packets are due on Tuesday. If you haven't checked it out yet, look at the previous postings (scroll down to look at them), to check a few answers from each page. This packet is your first math grade. No packets will be accepted Wednesday, so make sure it is done!
